Action breeds clarity
As a perfectionist, I’d want to understand everything & know ALL the steps BEFORE I took any action.
However, this mindset often led me to freeze in analysis paralysis, & limit me from making moves, because there are some things that you just cannot possibly plan out or fully know in advance. Anyone else been here?
Recovering from this illness is one of them. It can feel so messy, unpredictable, confusing & the doctors didn’t have any answers or direction for me.
So I felt mostly blind with every step I took.
I would describe it as the feeling of being blind-folded trying to walk through an unknown space by lifting your leg forwards, cautiously feeling around with your foot for any obstacles, searching & hoping for firm ground before you finally plant your foot & hesitantly transition your weight onto it, praying that it really is secure ground that will hold you, without knowing for sure. That transition is a leap of faith, that moment you decide to let go & trust into the unknown to move forwards. Its scary.
Back to my quote. So this process of recovery has been an example of ‘action breeds clarity’. It’s been a process of trial & error. Each step I took, I learnt something new & this cleared a bit of the pathway so I could see the next step. The further I got down the path, the clearer the path ahead became, because I was learning more along the way.
To take a step forwards into action, this means you have to embrace the possibility of it being ‘messy’ & ‘imperfect’ & maybe making some ‘mistakes’. It’s really hard because it’s our health we’re talking about here. And a lot of fear around this is that there will be permanent damage. I can fully appreciate this - I had these worries too.
So my message is - YES get support & educated, YES learn what you can so you can choose smart moves, BUT THEN allow yourself to take that (gentle) step forwards, even if you’re not fully sure, as when you finally do take action, this will give you more clarity about what’s right for you & what path to take to heal.
What do i mean by taking action?
It could be finally booking in to do a healing treatment, therapy, course, coaching or doing a healing tool. Do your research about it, but don’t spend endless amount of time on the research part and get stuck here.
Listen to you gut/intuition and ask yourself these questions:
does it feel right to trial this?
is it gentle?
is it low risk?
is it the right time for me to try this?
If yes to all of these then it’s time to take that step forwards.
Know that once you take that first small step , you can always then readjust or realign once you get more information from taking that first step.
You may in fact need to change course or pivot, and that is okay That is all part of the learning process in finding your way. And you wouldn’t have known to pivot unless you took a step forwards. No matter which step you take, you will always be one step closer to finding the right direction forwards.
Most of all, learning to trust our bodies innate wisdom and realising that we are more powerful than we give ourselves credit for really helps too.
